2003 Upper Deck Film and Comic trading cards take a two-way route with the character. While the release coincided with the release of the Ang Lee movie, the checklist has a heavy dose of its comic book origins. Like the movie its based on, the set is somewhat forgotten when compared to what came just a few years later with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both on the screen and in the hobby.
2003 Upper Deck Hulk Film and Comic Checklist Details
The checklist isn’t all that big or complex. It starts with an 81-card base set. Living up to the set’s name, both the movie and the comic are included. In fact, they’re both highlighted on every card but in slightly different ways. The majority of cards use the film as the focal point with a large image on the front. For these, the sidebar and back have comic images. It’s the opposite for the base cards that have a comic illustration for the primary image on the front. It’s a different approach but one that ultimately highlights the interconnection of the two mediums.
Every pack has a Famous Hulk Covers insert. Forty-five in all, it’ll take a couple of boxes and lucky collation to finish the set. Fronts reprint iconic covers with backs offering a brief synopsis.
Illustrated Film Scenes have artwork from John Romita Jr. A drawing is on the front with the comparable shot from the movie on the back.
Although autographs were making regular appearances in entertainment trading card sets at this point, they’re virtually non-existent here. However there are two signed cards in the product. As in two total. Both are one-of-a-kind Jack Kirby cut signatures. One of these also has a Stan Lee autograph to go with it.
