1994 Cardz Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reinterprets one of the most famous science fiction stories of all-time as a set of trading cards. It does so with more than just a base set as well, adding some chase elements including a coveted autograph from the author, Douglas Adams.

Spanning 100 cards, the base set offers an illustrated retelling of Adams’ work as well as fleshing things out a little more with a handful of subsets. Originally a radio play, the space adventure starring Arthur Dent has been spun off in several directions since it originally appeared in 1978. There was the novelization, television series, Hollywood movie, video game, amongst others. And trading cards.
Fronts are full-bleed, highlighting comic-style art. Several notable contributed to the set including Sergio Aragonés, Paul Chadwick, Al Williamson and Michael Lark. Backs frame short write-ups inside of a travel guide.
1994 Cardz Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has two main insert sets. Four TekChrome cards combine to land 1:12 packs, or approximately two per box if things go according to plan. A standard insert in a lot of Cardz sets, these offer a foil sort of shine.
There is also a pair of holograms that have a couple of key moments from the story in illustrated form. They’re not the most complex use of the technology but they are holograms.
Finally, there’s a tough autograph from author Douglas Adams. Unless you pull one directly from a pack, it may be tough to tell if it’s a pack-inserted one, though. They’re all standard base cards with Adams’ signature on the back. There’s no additional marking or addition to differentiate it from a card that may have been signed after the fact at a convention, other appearance or chance encounter on the street.
