1994 Fleer Marvel Universe is a reboot of sorts for the iconic line. The format is largely the same, at least with the base set. But with Fleer swallowing up SkyBox, there’s a new manufacturer on the back. Besides a comprehensive base set, there are several inserts to chase. Yes, holograms are back but so are some other technologies and card types.
1994 Fleer Marvel Universe Checklist Overview
At 200 cards, the base set is a big one for a set of Marvel trading cards. Subsets are nothing new for Marvel Universe sets, but the approach is a little different this time around. The first 90 cards all revolve around nine-card themes — ideal for paging.
It kicks off with nine Freeze Frame cards that place characters against photographic backdrops. Following that are nine different subsets based on storylines. Each of these act as a puzzle that create something like a comic splash page. The back portion of the set breaks down into traditional character cards.
For the story-driven subsets, backs act as a recap of key events and what issues things happen in. Character cards offer bios, key information and the Power Ratings that rank specific attributes each hero and villain.
Inserts
No matter the license or sport, in the mid ’90s Fleer was starting to offer a variety of box and pack configurations for different places. For example, hobby boxes might be packaged one way while retail another, often with fewer cards per pack or not as many packs in a box. Different configurations might have have exclusive cards or offer varying insertion rates. That’s the case in 1994 Fleer Marvel Universe. Hobby boxes are joined by Walmart and jumbo.
From the first Impel Marvel Universe set in 1990, Holograms were a key chase. They’re back once again, this time with higher quality 3-D artwork. In hobby, they’re 1:36 packs. Walmart packs are a little easier, landing 1:18 packs. Although there are four Holograms on the 1994 Fleer Marvel Universe checklist, each card has both red and green backgrounds. So a master set would have eight cards, not just the four.
Nine Power Blast cards (1:4 hobby packs) used etched foil to showcase some of the most popular Marvel characters at the time. Gold parallels are exclusive to Walmart packs while Silver versions are only in jumbo packs.
Suspended Animation continues with the product’s use of different materials. The acetate stock on these feels like plastic a makes for a see-through background.
Although sometimes referred to as Marvel Universe Series V, Fleer is very explicit in the fact that the intent was to start fresh with the line. Packaging is explicit in noting its status as “First Edition.”
