1967 Topps Who Am I? trading cards take a trivia-filled trip through history, showcasing a broad mix of famous figures. Athletes, presidents, monarchs and explorers are just some of the types of people collectors will meet on the checklist. But there’s a Halloween-inspired twist that wrecks havoc on card condition today.

1967 Topps Who Am I? Checklist Details

The set isn’t a big one. A total of 44 cards covering several hundreds years into the past. Understandably, much of this is centered on American history but it does venture into other parts of the world as well. Historical highlights include Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, Thomas Edison and Queen Elizabeth II.

U.S. Presidents include George Washington, who leads off the checklist, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Benjamin Franklin. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy is in the set but John F. Kennedy is not.

When it comes to the most valuable 1967 Topps Who Am I? cards, things shift to the baseball field and a quartet of the game’s legends: Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax.

Wait! There’s a Scratch

The most unique aspect of the product is how it’s presented. The set’s subjects all come with disguises, somewhat hiding their faces and a clue as to their identity. Most of these add a level of simple humor, especially to the original target audience who likely were half asleep during a lot of their history classes.

Here’s the catch. Those disguises were intended to be scratched off like a lottery ticket, revealing both their face and name. With condition being key to cards’ values, scratched cards aren’t nearly as coveted as they’re not in their original form. The residue left behind and other things like scratches and indentations can also lessen the overall eye appeal.

Unscratched
Scratched

But back in 1967, trading cards weren’t intended to be ranked on a ten-point scale based on condition. Give a kid a pack of cards that work the same as a scratch and win ticket, they’re going to get scratched and the little metallic shavings are going to be all over the kitchen table.

Ignoring the scratch gimmick and 1967 Topps Who Am I? is an attractive set. The painted portraits are solid. Backs offer more clues inside a giant question mark with some illustrations adding some more life.

It’s possible that a second Who Am I? set could have been in the works as a test proof of at least one additional card — The Beatles’ Paul McCartney — has surfaced on the secondary market.

Today, cards aren’t too hard to find. The subject matter has ensured its relevance remains. However, those looking for top-condition unscratched cards could be in for some work.
