You don’t truly become a friendly neighborhood superhero by being alone all the time. 1990 Comic Images Spider-Man Team-Up trading cards highlight some of Peter Parker’s pairings and battle sharing over the years.
Like a lot of Comic Images’ Marvel sets around this time, the theme is tight but the information, creativity and content are at a minimum.
The main set has just 45 cards and it’s as straight forward as the name suggests. On the fronts, Spider-Man is shown alongside other characters he shared issues with. It’s a mixed lot with Iron Man, the X-Men, Hulk and even Santa Claus getting in on the action.
Artwork comes from straight out of the comics so it’s not overly original in that regard. Still, many of the illustrations are iconic on their own or come from legendary runs and artists so there’s a sense of familiarity for long-time Spider-Man readers.
Instead of text and background on the various team-ups, backs simply act as puzzle pieces. When complete they form a black and white shot of Spider-Man with the X-Men.
Each pack also comes with an unnumbered header card. Although not technically part of the main set, it’s easy enough to find and usually packaged together.
Considering the time this set came out, 1990 Comic Images Spider-Man Team-Up trading cards aren’t the most plentiful. That’s not to say that they’re rare, but they definitely show up less frequently than Impel Marvel Universe Series 1, which came out the same year. Without any sort of chase element or even a large set to build, prices are still reasonable.
