The 2003 Topps Daredevils autographs list is definitely on the hit and miss side. But when it hits, the results are some of the most valuable in the modern hobby.
The set is small with just five signers available in packs. They’re not easy to find either, landing 1:72 hobby packs. That works out to every other box.
Ben Affleck might not get much praise for his work in the movie, but his card is easily the most popular of the autographs available in packs. And why shouldn’t it be? He’s a legitimate Hollywood superstar who doesn’t have any other autograph cards. It’s also the second hardest card to pull at 1:2,156 packs. Obviously, they don’t show up very often today. But when they do, they command hundreds of dollars.
The rarest of the in-pack 2003 Topps Daredevil Autograph is Joe Pantoliano who plays Ben Urich. He’s inserted 1:2,802 packs, making him significantly tougher than even Affleck. Although a recognizable face, Pantoliano doesn’t have close to the same star power as the movie’s lead. So while it goes for a lot more than a Joe Pantoliano autograph might normally, it’s not nearly as valuable as Affleck.
Other autographs in 2003 Topps Daredevil include director Mark Steven Johnson, Scott Terra and Coolio, who didn’t appear in the final theatrical version as his small role was cut out.
Jennifer Garner Autograph Isn’t in Packs
There is a sixth card in the 2003 Topps Daredevil set and it’s one that has a lot of notoriety. Jennifer Garner, who played Elektra, has 50 cards. These weren’t in packs. Rather, Topps gave them out randomly to dealers as a sort of raffle for ordering product. The combination of low availability, controlled distribution and Garner’s fame combine to make this a hugely valuable card that rivals Affleck. It’d probably be even higher if the actress didn’t have additional autographs in the Alias Season 1 and Season 2 sets.
One thing to watch for, as with all high-end cards, is that the Affleck and Garner cards are authentic. They do have a history of being copied. So if you’re looking to purchase one, take an extra close look at the card and be sure to check the person you’re buying from. Cards that have been authenticated by reputable companies like BAS, PSA or JSA can also add a layer of security.
