1989 Comic Images Best of John Byrne offers a brief look at the career of one of the most prolific comic creators ever. It’s done in a similar vein as other creator-centric sets at the time like Todd McFarlane, Arthur Adams and Jim Lee.
From a checklist and set-building perspective, this is not a complex release. With just 45 cards, it’s on the small side. That said, it’s still a showcase for Byrne’s artwork. The X-Men, Fantastic Four and several other Marvel teams and characters are represented.
Fronts keep with the simple theme. There’s a white border that leads to Byrne’s art. Outside of the Marvel copyright, the only other text is the card number and caption, which for most cards is simply the character’s name.
While there’s lots of Byrne’s work, there’s no context outside of his drawings. Instead of write-ups and information on the backs, they go together to form puzzles.
The only other card in the set is a header card featuring Dr. Doom. It’s also the most plentiful in the product as there’s one in every pack.
Today, 1989 Comic Images Best of John Byrne is a fairly tough set of trading cards to find. Singles are out there but sets and unopened boxes and even packs show up only sporadically.
