1989 Comic Images Todd McFarlane trading cards highlight the influential artist’s artwork — and not much else.
Similar to a lot of the card maker’s other Marvel-themed sets at the time, it simply moves comic material from one medium to another without doing much to change or adapt it outside of cropping.
1989 Comic Images Todd McFarlane Checklist Details
The main set’s checklist consists of 45 cards. As one would expect, all have art done by McFarlane. It comes from his runs with both Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk so there is a solid mix of characters.
Fronts are basic with a white frame surrounding the image. Each cards also has a short caption to give it a name. Backs have no additional written content. Rather, they go together to form one of two different puzzles highlighting McFarlane pencil drawings Spider-Man and the Hulk.
Each pack also has one header card. It’s not numbered but is often considered for a master set.
The niche release isn’t rare but it definitely wasn’t produced to nearly the same levels as a lot of other trading cards in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Boxes and sets aren’t readily available. As for singles, collectors are likely to encounter small numbers of dealers with any sort of quantity rather than broad availability.
Comic Images did a second McFarlane set in 1990. In 1992, they also released a Spider-Man set centered on his run with the character.
The card maker produced a handful of other artist-focused releases around this period including Jim Lee, Mike Zeck and John Byrne.
