1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Motion is a different sort of set of trading cards. Instead of the standard comic turn, these use lenticular technology for more of an animation approach.
For what’s available in packs, the checklist has just 34 cards. Of those, 30 make up the base set. Each has a different character with most coming directly from the popular X-Men animated series that was still in its original run. The gimmick of the set is that cards show movement. When tilted, the images change kind of like Sportflics baseball cards from a decade earlier.
Complimenting the base set are four Virtual Vision inserts. Landing 1:18 packs (approximately one per box), these use computer generated images, a technique that was groundbreaking at the time to that level.
Arriving with a high price tag, the set failed to take off and the format wasn’t revisited. Unless there was a Virtual Vision card, packs came with just two cards. Those with an insert had only one.
Sometimes experiments pay off. In the case of 1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Motion, it did not. Today, the set offers something different. The cards also come from a timeframe when print runs were significantly smaller than they were earlier in the decade. Boxes and singles can still be found, but not in massive numbers.
