2008 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces 2 marks the second of three art-based sets released in a short period of time. Of course, it’s also a reboot of one of the most iconic Marvel trading cards lines of all-time whose original run lasted from 1992 through 1996. And while there are some premium elements, it doesn’t quite hold up to the original’s standard.
2008 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces 2 Checklist Details
The 90-card base set takes a high-end approach to art work. Featuring pieces by a variety of artists using different styles, the cards look good. But there’s a major difference from 1990s Marvel Masterpieces sets. Those had original artwork, giving plenty of personality and a cohesive focus. Here, it’s not new art. Rather, it draws from other places like covers and repurposes it.
Unlike Upper Deck’s 2007 Marvel Masterpieces, there are no parallels here.
The main chase element is sketch cards, which land one per hobby box. The checklist has a massive roster of nearly 200 artists who contributed to the set. All of these have original drawings done directly on the card.
Hobby boxes have a second hit, although it doesn’t really fit with the theme of the release. Fantastic Four Memorabilia cards have costume material from the 2005 film. Upper Deck had previous done a set dedicated to the movie with more relics. All four heroes and Dr. Doom are available here.
Avengers and Marvel Heroines both use foil and highlight different characters. The checklist for each is nine cards deep with one landing every 4.5 packs.
Iron Man and The Hulk have three different die-cut cards. However, instead of standard distribution, one for each character is in hobby packs, another in Walmart and the final one could only be found at Target.
The third and final Marvel Masterpieces set from Upper Deck’s first reboot arrived a few months after this one.
