1997 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man is both a relatively bland set and a landmark release. While it has a lot of the same premium art as previous Ultra Spider-Man sets, it’s lacking in the inserts department. That said, although exceptionally rare, this is the first product to offer Marvel sketch cards. So those that manage to break the odds get something very special.
1997 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man Checklist Details
The base set consists of 81 cards. It breaks down further into eight subsets, each based on a different Spider-Man comic. Subsets add some consistency as all have their own artist or team of artists. Joe Jusko, Mike Wieringo, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, Joe Quesada and Joe Kubert are among those who contributed to the set.
Standard versions of cards are done with red foil. These account for six cards per pack. The other two are Blue Foil parallels. Although short prints compared to base cards, they’re not exceptionally rare when looking at the product as a whole.
The only other inserts on the 1997 Fleer Ultra Spider-Man checklist are Sketchagraphs. These are sketch cards, the first in a set of Marvel trading cards. The artist lineup has lots of industry legends include Stan Lee, John Romita Sr., Sal Buscema, Mike Zeck and Bill Sienkiewicz.
Sketchagraphs land 1:288 packs, making them extremely scarce from the outset. In the decades since, many of these have been added to personal collections so they’re hard to find today.
So while the sketch cards are some of the most important and sought after Marvel trading cards ever products, they’re so hard to come by that the vast majority of collectors are left with the same base cards over and over. It’s a nice set, but a very different break from its predecessors.
