Marvel and DC have spent much of their collective histories as rivals trying to one-up the other. But there was a time when the two comic giants came together. While the results were sweeping, they weren’t lasting. Besides the comic books themselves, the combined universes spawned two sets of trading cards. First, there was the standard DC Versus Marvel that dug into the match-ups and familiar characters. However, it’s 1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel DC Amalgam that offers original characters.
The Amalgam Universe spun directly out of the comics that pitted the likes of Batman and Superman against Marvel’s Avengers, Spider-Man and more. The result was a mashup that ended up combining two similar characters to create one new one. You’ve got Dark Claw that’s equal parts Wolverine and Batman, Spider-Boy that mixes Spider-Man with Superboy, and Captain America combining with Superman to be Super-Soldier.
The 90-card base set highlights a ton of different characters through a variety of subsets like Heroes, Battles, Arch Foes and Secrets. There is no shortage of artists contributing to the cards, either.
1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel DC Amalgam has three different insert sets to go with the base cards. Amalgam Classics PowerBlast use etch-foil card stock to showcase Amalgam versions of classic covers.
Dave Dorman provides the art for Secret Crisis of the Infinity Hour, a nine-card puzzle. These cards are printed on canvas-style card stock.
Finally, there are six Holopix that use a hologram style to showcase key characters in the limited run line of comics.
