1998 Fleer SkyBox Star Trek TOS Season 2 trading cards take the same general format of the first season’s release and somehow manage to make it even stronger.
For the most part, things are very similar. Designs remain the same as does the general set composition. That means some early Star Trek autograph cards. The biggest addition to 1998 Fleer SkyBox Star Trek TOS Season 2 is one insert set. And it’s one that most never encountered because it was so tough. And that rarity is one of the reasons why it’s considered a classic among Star Trek trading cards.
The 81-card base set features three cards per episode plus three checklists at the end. These work in conjunction with many of the basic inserts.
Each episode also has two Character Log, two Behind the Scenes, one Profile and one Gold Plaque title card. These are all inserts but when you arrange it all in pages, each show has nine total cards. Needless to say, it’s a varied and comprehensive look at Star Trek‘s second season.
On the rare side, 1998 Fleer SkyBox Star Trek TOS Season 2 has seven Mirror, Mirror inserts. Based on the classic episode, each is double-sided foil with two renditions of the featured character. Inserted 1:720 packs, each is limited to just 200 copies. At the time, these were incredibly rare. They still are, even if our definitions of a small print run are much lower.
Autographs return as a box hit. Like the Season 1 set, the checklist is strong with several of the main Bridge Crew including William Shatner and DeForest Kelley. Leonard Nimoy’s first Star Trek autograph would have to wait a little bit longer.
