1994 SkyBox Sandman trading cards delve into the fantasy world of Neil Gaiman’s classic Vertigo comic. Offering work from a variety of artists, the checklist also offers a couple of attractive insert sets. Perhaps, most noticeable of all is the sheer size of the set as cards take on an oversize format.
1994 SkyBox Sandman Checklist Overview
The base set consists of 90 cards. It’s basically divided up into two sections. The first 50 cards use covers. For fans of the comic, that means lots of memorable art courtesy of Dave McKean. For the remainder of the set, the subject matter shifts to characters and inhabitants of the comic’s pages. Lots of different artists and styles are featured here including Mike Allred, Sam Keith, Dave Gibbons and Sergio Aragones.
Like SkyBox’s broader Vertigo trading card set, which also came out in 1994, cards use a tallboy format. While the 2.5 inches is standard for trading cards, they’re 4.5 inches tall, making them noticeably bigger than normal. This carries over to the set’s inserts as well.
The Endless spotlights the embodiment of natural forces that drive humanity: Dream, Destiny, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Death. Each of these has an elegant embossed bronze foil frame. Six cards make up the set with one landing every 18 packs.
There’s also a Morpheus hologram, which is a tough 1:180 packs or approximately every fifth box.
With Sandman‘s enduring popularity — which now includes a television adaptation on Netflix — 1994 SkyBox Sandman trading cards remain popular today. In fact, they might be more popular than ever as collectors look to branch out from the comics.
