2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trading cards continue the journey started by An Unexpected Journey. While some elements of this set are the same, the checklist has many new additions including additional tiers of autographs. Parallels and insert offerings also expand this time around.

2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Checklist Details

The main base set has 72 cards, down from An Unexpected Journey’s 101. This makes it one of the few things connected to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy to show restraint. All cards save for the first and last focus on retelling the movie’s story. Arriving more than a year after the film was released, spoilers aren’t an issue.

The base set has three parallels. Silver Foil Board are the only ones found with any regularity. That’s because they’re not overly rare pulls at 1:6 packs. Printing Plates and Arkenstone Foil cards, on the other hand, are all one-of-ones.

Autographs

Once again, autographs are the main chase in 2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. While there are multiple types, they all combine to land 1:24 packs — one per box.

The list of signers in the main Autographs portion of the checklist is easily the largest with 25 different cards. Key signers include Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Richard Armitage (Thorin) and Stephen Fry (Master of Lake-town).

Two more Creator Autographs are also in the product, Andy Serkis and writer Fran Walsh.

New this time around are two rarer signature levels. Poster Autographs repurpose images and add signatures. These have just 75 numbered copies each. There are also Illustration Autographs that use art as the backdrop. It’s worth noting these are not sketch card autographs. However, they are scarce with just 25 copies each and a much reduced checklist compared to the main signature spot of the checklist.

All pack-inserted autographs do have Printing Plates available, although the plates are not actually autographed.

2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug included a very small number of redemptions each good for an oversized triple autograph. It’s should be noted that these come with cut signatures taken from earlier Hobbit autograph cards and embedded here.

Other 2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Inserts

Standard insert cards are plentiful in 2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Samug — at least when it comes to the number of sets. Some of these are common, which others represent tough chases.

Sketch cards, sometimes dubbed Fine Art Cards here due to their strong quality are 1:108 packs or roughly every four boxes.

3D Lenticular cards are among the scarcest inserts in Cryptozoic’s Unexpected Journey set. They are here, too. Four are on the checklist but only three are available in packs, falling at a rate of 1:192 packs. The final card in the set is exclusive to the set’s binder.

Cryptozoic has done puzzles in many of their sets over the years. Collage is a small triptych puzzle with just three cards. That said, they’re about 1:4 hobby boxes.

Smaug is another tough insert set. Highlighting the titular dragon, these also land 1:96 packs.

Continuing on from where it left off in An Unexpected Journey, Character Biography adds nine more cards. These are among the easier inserts of the product at 1:12 packs.

The Character Biography, Collage and Smaug insert sets all have one-of-one Arkenstone and Printing Plate parallels.

Rounding out the 2015 Cryptozoic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug checklist are two sets that use acetate, giving them a see-through appearance and a plastic feel. Dwarf, which highlights the hair of the movie’s group, and Laketown. These work out to be approximately one per box.
