1992 Comic Images The Punisher: Guts and Gunpowder trading cards offer a more in-depth and varied approach than the character’s previous standalone set from a few years earlier. It’s not groundbreaking but it does show the card maker’s willingness to add a couple of chase elements.

With 90 cards, the base set is a big jump from the 50 of the 1988 set. Fronts are as basic as it gets when it comes to design. There’s an image taken from the comics done in full-color and that’s it. No captions, logos or any other layout elements.
Backs are framed as a War Journal Entry. Rather than getting into storylines, the set delves more into Frank Castle’s background and psyche. Thoughts about the character and notes from creators are both present. In the process, it feels a little different compared to a lot of other comic card sets up until that point.

Three Scratch and Sniff cards look to the sense of smell to compliment comic art. These are 1:24 packs or approximately two per box.
Prism cards are even tougher, landing 1:48 packs. Again, there are three cards to the chase set. These add a patterned background to the mix.
Although not rare, Guts and Gunpowder isn’t the easiest set to find. Comic Images seemed more focused on niche releases at the time unlike the wide appeal and distribution of Impel’s Marvel Universe line at the time. Values are solid but not overly expensive. Given the single-character approach to the release, that’s unlikely to change any time soon.
