If you’re looking for weird, 1990 Topps Image Image trading cards has a lot of it. Produced by the card maker’s UK arm, it covers the popular British program that skewered politics and pop culture in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Cards reflect this with lots of familiar names, albeit in satirical puppet form.
1990 Topps Spitting Image Checklist Details
This is a simple set in the sense that it’s 66 cards and nothing else. Unlike a lot of Topps entertainment releases during this period, not even stickers make the cut.
Every cards features news makers and celebrities from the time. That said, it is a British release so many of the names may not be familiar with North American audiences. It also explains why the royal family gets a fair bit of attention as well.
Rather than standard photos, cards capture people as they’re depicted in the show. That means they’re basically caricatures done up as puppets — and somewhat delightfully grotesque at that. The result is some of the strangest cards in existence for the likes of such hobby stars as Mike Tyson, Spock, Sylvester Stallone and Michael Jackson. Other notable names on the checklist include Jack Nicholson, Tina Turner, Prince, Madonna, John McEnroe and even the Pope.
Cards are not impossible to find, but they’re not overly plentiful, either. This is likely due more to do with the fact that the set originates in the UK more than anything.
