1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie Checklist, Trading Cards Details

At a glance, 1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie trading cards appear to be virtually the same as their Topps counterparts. In most ways, they are. Still, it’s another multi-series dive into Tim Burton’s iconic superhero movie that fuelled a merchandise phenomenon.

1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Series 2 Pack

1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie Checklist Details

Unlike Topps, 1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie trading cards is strictly a base set. It totals 308 cards, 154 for each of the two separate releases. That’s actually bigger than the Topps set — sort of. That’s because the one-per-pack Stickers in the Topps set are converted over to trading cards and folded into the main set. So, overall, the content is the same with a recap of the film plus some behind-the-scenes looks. It’s just presented a little differently.

At a glance or even a close look, O-Pee-Chee cards have the same general design as its Topps counterpart. Regular Series 1 cards have white borders while Series 2 are yellow. Often, O-Pee-Chee cards have bilingual text on them in French and English, making it easy to tell the Canadian and American cards apart. But that’s not the case here. 1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie cards are only English. Even the small print of copyright text lines up.

So how do you tell them apart? Honestly, it’s not easy. The main difference for the regular cards is the color on the back. O-Pee-Chee cards are noticeably brighter than Topps, which are greyish. Canadian cards have more of a cream back for the stock.

It’s also worthy noting that the Topps set has a glossy factory set. Cards in these sets have brighter backs like O-Pee-Chee. However, glossy cards are just that. They’re slick to touch and don’t show much grain in the stock.

Puzzle Cards

Bookending both series of 1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman Movie cards are 22 puzzle cards. These replace the Topps stickers, although the layout and content are otherwise the same. There’s an image on the front with the puzzle piece on the back. Instead of stickers, they’re simply printed as trading cards. This also means that numbering shifts for Series 2 cards as story and puzzle cards are part of the same numerical whole.

Outside of Canada, 1989 O-Pee-Chee Batman trading cards can be a little tricky to find. That said, it’s not a scarce or expensive product. Bat-mania spread north of the border, too, so it wasn’t hard to find at the time of its release. Boxes, packs and sets can all still be found today without a lot of trouble.
